Everyone wants top quality headphones to listen to their music, either on the go, work, or at home. Bose Quiet Comfort 15 and Dr. Dre Monster Beat headphones are two of top wireless headphones in today’s industry, but which one is better? One is made by one of the best sound companies and the other is made by the legendary producer and rapper, Dr. Dre, of the hip hop industry, who would surely know things about how one would want their music to sound like.

Sound Quality

In the previous series of the Bose Quiet Comfort wireless headphones the sound quality was not that great at all, but the Qc15 is major improvement, with microphones on the inside and the outside of the cup to tremendously improve the sound and it also prevents outside noises that would distort the sound. The Monster Beat headphones have great sound too but they do not have the technology of the QC15 to block out the outside distraction of other sounds.

Comfort

The Monster Beats are not really that comfortable nor are they that flexible or bendable as QC15, which basically means that they are easier to break. The QC15 have around the ear-fit- cups that adjust to anyone’s ear, making it easy to relax and just listen to your music or movie, they are foldable and come with a case so that you can protect your headphones, which causes you to worry less if you’re going to break them.

Price

Price is everyone’s major concern when it comes to buying the product even if the cheapest product is the one with the worse quality. I know that I have bought countless numbers of cheap headphones that only last me for a year or two. Both of these are both pricey pieces of equipment. The QC15 is about a hundred dollars cheaper than the MB, and they are well worth the price.

So the winner is… drum rolls… The “Bose Quiet Comfort 15″!

High-Performance Headphones from One of the Biggest Names in Music

“People aren’t hearing all the music. Artists and producers work hard in the studio perfecting their sound. But people can’t really hear it with normal headphones. Most headphones can’t handle the bass, the detail, the dynamics. Bottom line, the music doesn’t move you. With Beats, people are going to hear what the artists hear, and listen to the music the way they should: the way I do.”- Dr. Dre

Genson
I’ll start out by saying I collect mid-priced headphones(between $50 – $300). It may be an odd hobby, but it gives me a certain perspective that others may not have. I’m also an engineering major, and I found the general lack of objective, in-depth headphone reviews on Amazon to be disconcerting. So, here I am, taking a shot at reviewing some of the headphones I either own or have spent a lot of time listening to.

I’ve devised a simple six-song test and rating system, where 0 – 2 is abysmal, 2.1 – 4 is poor, 4.1 – 6 is mediocre, 6.1 – 8 is above average, and 8.1 – 10 is excellent.

The songs are very diverse; I was trying to represent a wide range of genres. They are “The Chain” by Fleetwood Mac(encoded in 256 kbps Ogg Vorbis), “Every Planet We’ve Reached is Dead” by Gorillaz(256 kbps .ogg), “Concerto Grosso #26 in D major” by Handel(256 kbps .ogg), “I Know You Are, But What Am I?” by Mogwai(500 kbps .ogg), “Afro Blue” by Triplexity(192 kbps .ogg), and “The Patient” by Tool(500 kbps .ogg).

I listened to everything on an iAudio 7 with the equalizer set to flat and all the sound effects turned off.

Sound Quality(6.8/10)

The Chain(6/10) – bass is nice and deep, slightly exaggerated, but still pleasant to listen to. Distortion is present, but very minimal. Mid tones and highs are somewhat underrepresented and bland, but otherwise sound decent. Instrument separation is a bit muddy. The main negative here is the sound stage, which is tiny.

Every Planet(8/10) – lows and highs both sound very smooth and rich in this song. Mid tones, as before, are underrepresented and bland. Instrument separation is good, but the sound stage is very underwhelming.

Concerto(6/10) – the bass in this song is deep and vibrant. Lows are nicely responsive. Mids and highs don’t have quite the balanced presence they should have. Instrument separation is fairly muddy. Once again, the sound stage is lacking.

I Know You Are(7/10) – bass, as expected, is nice and vivid. Distortion was too high near the beginning of the song, but gradually leveled off. Highs were nice and crisp, but mid tones were lacking. Instrument separation, as was the case with most other songs, is a bit muddy, and the sound stage, while not as bad in this song, is still mediocre.

Afro Blue(8/10) – the lows in this song were pleasantly punchy, and the highs were fairly crisp and smooth. Mid tones were muddy, however, as was the overall instrument separation(no surprises here). The sound stage is similar to what it was in “I Know You Are, But What Am I?”; it is more present than in most songs, but doesn’t have the fullness I would expect of circumaural headphones at this price.

The Patient(6/10) – right off the bat, the bass guitar in this song sounds great. Treble is decent, but underrepresented, as are the mid tones. The primary complaint I had in this song was actually not the sound stage(which isn’t emphasized anyway), but the instrument separation, which I felt was greatly lacking in precision.

Overall Sound(6.8/10) – the bass from these cans is overall clean and pleasant. Somewhat exaggerated, but not greatly so. Distortion, while present at times, is also in small amounts. These aren’t the subs-attached-to-your-head that some might expect before having listened to them. Treble sounds above average, but slightly underrepresented. The mid tones even more so – to the extent that they come across as bland. Instrument separation is also a bit muddy(although not too terrible). Another reviewer commented that these headphones were designed to sound slightly muddy, but I find this hard to believe, since the advertisement on Amazon claims “precise audio clarity”. But as I’ve mentioned time and again, the biggest drawback to these cans is the sound stage, which just wasn’t there. Overall, though, I would give these headphones an above average score in terms of sound quality.

Design(9/10)
These are a closed-air, cirumaural design, and a very attractive one at that. I like the styling very much. Lines on these phones are aggressive, but clean and elegant at the same time. They are also very comfortable. They’re lightweight and have plenty of padding. My only complaint here is the headband, which I felt was too rigid, and didn’t conform to my head as much as I’d have liked. I also like how mobile these are – they fold up, and come with a nice case to carry them around in. Great for traveling.

They are also built pretty well. I would rather see more aluminum at this price, but the plastic they’re composed of is nice and solid. They seem durable, and I doubt they would fall apart anytime soon.

Noise Isolation(7/10)
Noise isolation in these Monsters is accomplished via the closed circumaural design, which features plenty of thick padding, and active destruction of outside sound waves entering the headphone. I am a fan of the former; the latter, not so much. In my experience, active noise cancellation interferes with sound quality, not only because of the waves that must be emitted to interfere with incoming ambient noise, but also because an external headphone amplifier can’t really be used with noise-canceling headphones due to their built-in amplifier, which is typically not of premium quality. It’s difficult to judge on a case-by-case basis, because the built-in amp can’t be removed, but going by the sound produced by the Monster Beats, I don’t think they’re an exception to this rule.

All of that aside, the Monsters were definitely designed to be noise-canceling, so I won’t dock points for that. What I will take off points for is relative effectiveness, which I didn’t feel was where it should be, all things considered. They do block quite a lot of noise, but plenty of noise still bleeds through. I’ve heard noise-canceling headphones that are considerably more effective. Then again, I’ve also heard much worse, and these, in my opinion, are above average.

Bottom Line(6/10)
Monster Beats by Dr. Dre are a good, above-average sounding and noise-isolating pair of headphones that feature a comfortable, highly stylish, and mobile design. This doesn’t come close to justifying their high price, however. Sound quality should be significantly higher in this price range. But as always, different people perceive sound quality in different ways, and I highly encourage you to listen for yourself to a wide range of headphones before spending money. Those interested in good, deep bass at or under the price of the Monsters should also listen to various Beyerdynamic headphones, and the ATH-D40fs model by Audio Technica.

241 of 262 people found the following review helpful.
Excellent bass. Stylish. Great for travel. Surround sound/depth could be better.
By Kiyo M.
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3OTGQCWSLUD0C I have been really satisfied (and still using) with the Sennheiser HD-595 Premier Headphone (which cost about $300 at the time; the most expensive headphone I’ve ever spent). Sennheiser is known for making leading professional headphones/microphones/etc.

…And then there’s MONSTER.

As far as I’m aware, I’ve only known MONSTER for selling really really expensive overpriced cables for TV/home theater/audio input components. Well, Monster has teamed up with hip hop artist/actor/record producer, Dr. Dre (made Eminem famous) and created this “High-Definition” headphones, which they call BEATS.

I’ll be comparing the Monster Beats headphone with the Sennheiser HD-595, since it’s the most expensive headset that I own (till this one), and I’d be shocked to find something that sounds better than the HD-595 (that’s around the same price range or less).

I think it’s obvious most people will expect the bass to be the #1 priority with this headphone, considering it’s by MONSTER + Dr. Dre and called Beats. Well, it definitely doesn’t disappoint there. The Monster Beats definitely wins in terms of bass. (Of course, Dr. Dre’s genre relies heavily on it). If you listen to lots of rock/rap then you’ll love the bass on these. If you get headaches with bass or you just can’t stand it, then obviously, these aren’t really for you.

The Monster Beats headphones require two AAA batteries to listen. You cannot use the headphones if no batteries are inserted, or if you don’t have the switch to ON (located on the right side of the headphone). The batteries go inside the left compartment of the headphone. I’ve been listening with this headphone for the past two days and the batteries are still going. I’ll have to use it longer to fully test the battery life, but hopefully it’ll last several months because that would be really annoying if I have to keep replacing batteries. Since the headphone is powered by the battery, the sound is obviously amplified more, as well as the bass, than regular headphones. Whether you’re using this on your computer, portable device or iPod, you can have the volume at a low setting and it’ll still sound a lot louder than if you were to use a different headset at that volume setting.

For taking the headphones on-the-go and for traveling, the Monster Beats win again in terms of portability. The Monster Beats can be collapsed nicely and comes with a nice protective case to store it in; so you won’t be damaging that nice shiny glossy sleek look of the headphone. The Beats definitely has a more youthful look and the shiny piano black finish will definitely catch more attention; however, personally, I think the Sennheiser HD-595 has more of a professional look. The Sennheisher HD-595 has more of a soft earmuffs cushion and the cups are larger, whereas the Beats are leather and smaller. The headphone cable for the Beats is also shorter, so the length is suitable for portable devices; whereas the HD-595, the cord is insanely long and not really made for walking around with it (but you can always replace the cord).

Without taking off your Beats headphone, you can press and hold the center button (The beat logo) on the right side of the headphone and it’ll mute the sound until you release it again; this is convenient when someone needs to tell you something for a brief moment or you want to hear what’s going outside for just awhile. The Beats headphone are closed headphones, so just by putting the headphone, you’ll notice outside noise being reduced.

The vocals treble seem to be slightly higher than normal, but then again, it is also counter-balanced because again, the bass is stronger than what most headphones produce. The Monster Beats is great for hip hop/rap/rock music that use bass, of course, but what about others?

For overall music, despite the impressive bass on the Beats, I am still way more impressed with the sound of the HD-595. Compared to the HD-595, I feel the Beats lack more depth in surround sound. Granted, the Beats headphone are closed headphones, whereas the HD-595 are open for a more natural sound than some confined studio recording feel. When I’m listening to the same music with the HD-595, I feel like I’m actually there listening to a concert/theater and can really hear the separation of instruments/vocals/sound effects/etc.; it really feels like true surround sound. On the other hand, the Beats doesn’t quite have that feel. With the Beats, despite some surround sound, I still know I’m listening with headphones. Don’t get me wrong, the Beats doesn’t have poor surround sound, but once you experience other high-end headphones, you will notice the difference in depth/separate channels.

Pros:
+ Impressive Bass. Best for bass lovers.
+ Amplifies sound for portable mp3 players/iPod
+ Noise cancellation
+ Stylish/glossy finish design (great packaging/presentation)
+ Leather cushion/material feels high quality/comfortable
+ Headphones can collapse when you put it away
+ Nice solid case for storing the headphones
+ Quick mute button on the right side of the headphone (the Beat logo) by holding it.
+ Headphone cord only on the left side. (Also comes with iPhone, Blackberry, etc speaker black cord)

Cons:
- Could use more depth in surround sound. (compared to Sennheiser, there’s more surround sound with the HD-595, as you’ll be able to distinguish different instruments/beats as separate channels/different directions)
- Requires two AAA and you must turn on the headphone switch ON. Forgetting to turn the switch off can waste the battery. Headphones will NOT run without batteries.
- Too expensive. (like any other Monster Products)

Overall, if you absolutely love bass and listen to mostly hip-hop/rap/rock; noise-canceling; made for traveling; then these headphones are for you. However, if you want overall balanced sound, greater depth/surround sound concert/theater feel, then I highly recommend the Sennheiser HD-595 (not to mention, it’s about half the price cheaper now than what I paid for it).

The first pair I bought was a year ago and I LOVED them from the first note I heard. I had never owned a pair of high end headphones so this was quite an upgrade for me. I was having a blast hearing my music library in a totally different way. This all changed about 2-3 months in as the screws which secure the earphones to the headbands started to get loose. With no way of securing them (you can’t screw them back in) they eventually started to fall out. Little by little the headphones began to fall apart until they were no longer usable. I called Monster support up and they agreed to send me a new pair as long as I sent the broken pair to them (at my cost). Awesome! Well not so much…

About 3-4 months later I took off the headphones after using them and noticed the headband had a crack right in the middle of it! Not only were my headphones no longer stylish but they were no longer stable. I tried to work through the problem until one day I went to put them on after having them around my neck only to find that the left ear cushion was missing! More than a handful of times I have had an ear cushion fall off and I’d have to snap them back in but losing them makes the headphones completely useless, both for comfort and sound reasons.

I called Monster back and they told me they could not replace them again for free but I take advantage of their out of warranty program and get a new pair for $150. Gee let me think…I already coughed up $300 on these – should I put another $150 into this product that has already failed me twice? Of course the answer was no. While the cans are nice when they work I just couldn’t put more money into something that I knew would break. Additionally, it was a hassle having to replace the batteries every few weeks (or have them run out of juice on you in the middle of the day while outside).

Therefore, I would have to recommend consumers shopping for headphones look elsewhere. In the meantime I will be looking for reliable/well crafted replacement.

PS The cord would always wear away at the ends, too.

The Nokia 701 represents a generation shift for Symbian. Symbian Belle is a bold step forward for Nokia and the 701 will be the first phone to introduce the new Symbian to the world.

Nokia 701 specifications

The body of the Nokia 701 was made based on the C7, measures 117.2*56.8*11 mm and weighs 131 grams. The front of the device holds the 3.5″ IPS LCD based ClearBlack display with nHD resolution and Gorilla Glass protection. The blacks are not as good as the AMOLED but it has 1000 nits of brightness make up for that. Also the IPS technology promises 160 degrees of views. Actually it’s one of the brightest displays yet. Under the display we find the Call, Menu and End Call hardware keys while above we find the earpiece, a secondary VGA camera and the sensors.

On the left side we only find the charger plug while the right side holds the dedicated camera key, lock slide, volume rocker and voice command. On top we find power key, microUSB port and the 3.5mm standard audio jack while the bottom only holds the lanyard eyelet. The back of the display holds the 8MPx camera with dual LED flash and the loudspeaker.

Remove the battery cover and you see a 1300mAh which gives the Nokia 701 impressive battery times: 17 hours of talk time(7 in 3G), 23 days of stand by time,3 days of music playback, 9 hours of video playback, over 6 hours of video recording, 3 hours of video calling and 11 hours of navigation(courtesy of Nokia Maps).Under the battery you find the microSD card slot while the SIM card can be accessed without removing the battery.

The Nokia 701 will be powered by a 1GHz CPU with 512 MB of RAM and will run Symbian Belle. It will aslo feature NFC technology. Since the power is a lot more than Symbian is used to the Nokia 701 is very fast and responsive. The Symbian Belle brings a new homescreen and menu, updated apps and a new polished interface. It also brings 6 homescreens with individual wallpapers that you can add or delete. Widgets can be re-sized and you can even put shortcuts on the homescreen.

Another big change is the addition of a pull down menu similar to Android’s notification area. This is where you will find all the notifications and toggles for mobile data,Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and silent mode. The Menu has also been changed and it gets better functionality and it’s more easy to use, though it’s not as convenient as other OS menus. The task manager remains the same.

Nokia 701 has an 8MPx camera with fixed focus and dual LED flash. It has a new interface but the changes are mostly cosmetic. It offers a lot of scenes, Flash modes and other options like face detection, self timer, settings(ISO, white balance and others) and geotagging. Picture quality is good though images tend to be over-sharpened. Detail amount is plenty and even low light pictures look good. Video recording is done at 720p @ 30fpswith stereo sound. Quality is also great.

The browser has a new interface and improved usability but nothing groundbreaking. It also has text reflow support, flash support and Kinetic scroll. Over all the browser experience is good, zooming is fluid and there are no page breaks. Also Nokia claims that the browser on Symbian Belle is three times faster than the one on Anna.

In terms of connectivity Nokia 701 offers it all: quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support and five-band 3G support with HSPA (14.4Mbps download and 5.76Mbps upload), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, USB with On-The-Go support, FM Transmitter, NFC and audio jack that can be used as a TV-out.

Despite the fact that the Nokia 701 isn’t very impressive in terms of hardware(except for the screen which is really impressive) it has more than enough features for the Symbian Belle to run very smooth and fast. It might not be a flagship but it leads the way of the new generation of Symbian devices.

Not too badly.
DOES preserve stereo separation! I’m mixing a song right now through these splitters and while panning back and forth, my headphones respond as if the splitter weren’t in at all. It doesn’t turn stereo to mono despite what that one guy said. And yes, I’ve got two pairs of headphones plugged in.

I discovered that if both sets of headphones plugged into the splitter aren’t firmly plugged in, it will do the stereo to mono thing, but if you click them in properly, you’re fine.

Does the job. Flexible
By Michael Yang
does the job and no complaints. These type of splitters are ideal because you don’t have to worry about it breaking from bending. I purchased a splitter before that wasn’t wired, just a solid unit, and it broke from bending too much.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful.
Cheap and cheerful, but caution the volume drop
By Torley
As other reviewers have noted (and I’ve taken this into account for purchasing), the volume drops across both outputs since the signal is split — not a big concern for me, but on some setups this may result in an unhappy amount of line noise when you have to crank source volumes to compensate.

I use this because I have a stereo deck (with high-quality Sony MDR-V900s attached) and a Plantronics headset I use for recording video tutorials and such on my computer. I didn’t want to actively have to toggle back-and-forth, since that’d impede my workflow: my use case is swapping between headsets quickly, and this Belkin splitter is a tidy little solution!

I think we should get ourselves some honey bee facts, after all so many healing and health-promoting opportunities for the humans begin with this little busy creature. As you read the following 20 statements about honey’s great creator, you will be so intrigued just like me by this teensy-weensy fellow’s extraordinary abilities.

1. The honey bee has been around for 30 million years.

2. It is the only insect that produces food eaten by man.

3. Honey bees are environmentally friendly and are vital as pollinators.

4. They are insects with a scientific name – Apis mellifera.

5. They have 6 legs, 2 eyes, and 2 wings, a nectar pouch, and a stomach.

6. The honeybee’s wings stroke 11,400 times per minute, thus making their distinctive buzz.

7. A honey bee can fly for up to six miles, and as fast as 15 miles per hour, hence it would have to fly around 90,000 miles – three times around the globe – to make one pound of honey.

8. The average honey bee will actually make only one twelfth of a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime.

9. It takes about 556 workers to gather 1 pound of honey from about 2 million flowers.

10. It takes one ounce of honey to fuel a bee’s flight around the world.

11. A honey bee visits 50 to 100 flowers during a collection trip.

12. A colony of bees consists of 20,000-60,000 honeybees and one queen.

13. Worker honey bees are female, live 6 to 8 weeks and do all the work.

14. The queen bee lives for about 2-3 years and is the only bee that lays eggs. She is the busiest in the summer months, when the hive needs to be at its maximum strength, and lays up to 2500 eggs per day.

15. The male honey bees are called drones, and they do no work at all, have no stinger, all they do is mating.

16. Each honey bee colony has a unique odour for members’ identification.

17. Only worker bees sting, and only if they feel threatened and they die once they sting. Queens have a stinger, but don’t leave the hive to help defend it.

18. It is estimated that 1100 honey bee stings are required to be fatal.

19. Honey bees communicate with one another by “dancing”.

20. During winter, honey bees feed on the honey they collected during the warmer months. They form a tight cluster in their hive to keep the queen and themselves warm.

My most memorable honey bee fact is No 19: Honey bees communicate with one another by “dancing”. And the most incredible to me is No 2: It is the only insect that produces edible food for man!

Angels are protectors, messengers, healers and destroyers. They figure most prominently in the world’s three major monotheistic religions: Christianity, Judaism and Islam, though angels have been a part of many if not most religions throughout history. The ancient Greeks believed in unseen spirits known as daemons that often watched over mortals. The god Hermes was most similar to the modern interpretation of angels in that he was messenger to the gods, guided travelers on perilous journeys and even had wings, albeit on his ankles. Devas, in Hinduism, are supernatural beings that represent the forces of nature as well as moral values and serve Brahman, the creator of the universe. Like the devas in Hinduism, the devas in Buddhism are supernatural beings, however they do not represent abstract concepts so much as possess superior abilities to mortals. They are more powerful, more enlightened and live longer than human beings. And like angels in the Judeo-Christian pantheon, the Buddhist devas are organized into a hierarchy.

There are three particular classes of devas, identifiable by the realms of the universe in which they exist. The devas of the rkpyadh’tu or formless realm indeed are formless and meditate on formless ideas. The devas of the Rkpadh’tu or form realm, while having physical forms do not have genders nor do they have passions or desires. The third realm is the Kmadhtu and the devas there are most like humans in that they have passions both sensual and intellectual. And like humans, they are sometimes overcome by these passions. Each realm is further divided into different worlds and heavens, similar to the Christianity hierarchy, as defined by Pseudo-Dionysius in the fifth century, has nine choirs of angels divided into three spheres, each sphere divided into three classes of angels.

The angels of the third sphere–the Principalities, Archangels and Angels–are the messengers and soldiers of heaven. The second sphere– Dominions, Virtues and Powers–are the governors. The first sphere–Seraphim, Cherubim and the Thrones– are closest to God and thus are supposed to be perfect. However, in the Christian tradition, Lucifer is seen as a fallen seraph angel. His rebellion against God precipitated his fall from heaven and he became the ruler of the underworld. Angels of the third sphere have the most contact with humans, as they are assigned to each human at birth to assist them throughout their mortal lives, but this proximity to humans makes them most susceptible to sin. In Islam, angels, or Malaaikah, are incapable of sin because they do not have free will. Therefore Satan is regarded as a jinn, a spirit with free will, because he turns his back on Allah.

The archangels carry messages between God and humans. The number of archangels varies, though only four are specifically named in the Old Testament, Gabriel, Michael, Raphael and Uriel. Together they represent the cardinal directions-Gabriel is the North, Michael is the East, Raphael the West and Uriel the South. Along with the other archangels, they also govern the months, astrological signs, planets and days of the week: Figure 1.1* Angel Month Astrological Sign Gabriel January Aquarius Barchiel February Pisces Machidiel March Aries Asmodel April Taurus Ambriel May Gemini Muriel June Cancer Verchiel July Leo Hamaliel August Virgo Uriel September Libra Barbiel October Scorpio Adnachiel November Sagittarius Hanael December Capricorn Figure 1.2* Angel Planet Day Raphael Sun Sunday Gabriel Moon Monday Sammael Mars Tuesday Michael Mercury Wednesday Zidkiel (Aniel) Venus Thursday Hanael (Kafziel) Saturn Friday Kepharel (Zadkeil) Jupiter Saturday Angels are many things to many people, and have been throughout history. Whether sounding trumpets to bring down the walls of Jericho, accompanying Mohammed on his ascension to Heaven, or symbolizing the elements of the universe, angels are fascinating creatures that transcend religion and definition.

I used this setup to sand some house facing down to the wood because the paint was peeling. Scraping and orbital sanding were taking hours per square foot, but this setup moves right along. There is some danger to gouging especially when the disc is in the first 10 minutes. Possibly a larger diameter would be safer but I don’t know. On the other hand the small size lets you zero in on stubborn spots. 50 grit might work better. I can’t see any courser working well.
The bearings/gear system don’t sound smooth like a router but at speed the vibration is no trouble. There are higher priced models; don’t know exactly the benefit but they do have a different trigger system. This one has one lever high and in front which you can lock and then shut off with the thumb on the hand holding the grinder while your other hand is say on a ladder or something. Not bad.

I’ve had mine for nearly a year. I’ve used it to sand, grind high spots in concrete, cut steel bolts, scrub other tools, cut graphite golf shafts, and destroy bad hard drives for my computer. The most extreme use was running it one day for 6 hours of continuous use on a big sanding job. I’ve abused this thing in ways that it is not designed for and it still won’t quit.

Once though of as a mere harmless but annoying pest, ticks are of growing concern for their Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Lyme Disease-carrying ability. Learn the facts, and keep your dog tick and disease-free.

Ticks are a despicable lot of parasitic bloodsuckers. They bide their time in wooded areas, stay close to ground level and wait for an unsuspecting mammal to shuffle on by so they can descend upon him and sink those nasty little teeth in for a long meal of blood, blood and more blood. Once a tick has embedded itself into your dog, it will hang on indefinitely, taking in copious amounts of blood until it is bloated and gorged. If you find a corn kernel-like object hanging from your dog’s ear or elsewhere on his body that turns out to have legs, it’s probably a tick that’s been feasting for hours. Remove it immediately, check your dog thoroughly for more ticks, and then call your veterinarian for further direction and advice.

Check Your Dog Regularly for Ticks

If you live in or near a wooded area, perform a routine tick check on your dog. As a good dog owner who’s been looking out for your dog’s best interests and ensuring him a happy life, you should already be familiar with the “chassis inspection.” If not, now is as good a time as any to get familiar with it. Have your dog sit down in front of you and run your hands all over his body. Check his ears and the undersides of his paws. Don’t forget those out of sight areas like his belly and the place where his leg bends into his body. He won’t like these intrusions at first, but if you’re gentle and speak to him softly in that special voice reserved only for him, your dog will eventually grow to tolerate the tick inspection and may even enjoy it.

Tick Removal

If the tick is well-embedded into your dog’s flesh, use a tweezer to grip it firmly, as close to the skin as possible. You want to remove the entire tick without leaving the embedded head behind (I know- disgusting, but necessary). If you take some skin along with the tick, that’s okay- it’s more important to get the head out than than fret over a little lost skin. If you find that the head has remained imbedded and you can’t remove it, keep a close eye on the area. Your dog’s immune system will likely create a small site of infection around the head as a way to dislodge it. That’s perfectly normal; it’s just his body doing its thing to ward off disease.

Once the tick is out, save it in a jar and send it off to school with your little ones for show and tell. Just kidding about the show and tell…. but you really should hold the tick captive in a jar if you can. You’ll have it as a specimen to show your vet “just in case” your dog starts exhibiting signs of Lyme disease.

Complications of a Tick Bite

Ticks pose the threat of disease – not just mild illness, but serious, debilitating diseases such as Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (prevalent in the western United States), Lyme Disease (prevalent in the Northeastern US), and other less commonly known bacteria-bourne illnesses that can lead to serious complications including paralysis and death.

You can choose not practice tick prevention, thereby engaging your dog in a little “Russian Roulette” each time a tick bites… or you can do the smart thing, which is keep him tick-free and consequently, disease-free.

Tick Control

Many of the same products that afford protection against fleas also repel ticks, particularly the “spot on” applications such as Frontline®, that can be applied to the skin between your dog’s shoulder blades once a month for maximum protection. Ticks can also be controlled with the traditional flea prevention methods such as dipping, bathing, spraying and powdering.

Talk to your vet about which tick repellant is right for you, as he has access to your dog’s medical history and can offer advice based on prior health records.

In the story of ancient Greece, the god of Prometheus stole fire from the heaven for human. And then human learned to utilize fire for their lives, which made Zeus furious. Therefore, Zeus required his son Hephaestus to make a woman with clay called Pandora, which meant “the person endowed with all the merits”. She was a fabulous woman with extraordinary beauty. Every god conferred her with a talent to make her perfect. Aphrodite gave her beauty, Hermes made her eloquent and Apollo presented her with the gift of music. Finally, Zeus gave Pandora a box, in which there were disasters and plagues.

Then Zeus sent Pandora to the earth to Empathies, the brother of Prometheus. Prometheus was sure that Zeus had an ill will towards human, so he warned Empathies not to take anything from the heaven. Unfortunately, Empathies was an honest and kind man and took Pandora as his wife. After their marriage, Pandora was often left alone at home because her husband had to help the human with their lives. And Pandora always wondered what was hidden inside the box.

One day, when Pandora was all by herself at home, she could not resist her curiosity and opened the box Zeus had given to her. However, there was nothing but all kinds of catastrophes in the box. Before Pandora opened the box, there were no disasters on the earth, and people lived a serene and happy life, since all the disasters were kept inside the box to free people from misfortune. But due to Pandora’s ignorance and curiosity, plagues fled from the box and spread on the earth. From that time on, human began to suffer from all kinds of disasters such as disease and plague, misfortune and misery, selfishness and greed, madness and jealousy, pomposity and cruelty.

In a panic, Pandora immediately closed the box and hope was left in the box. Hope was secretly placed in the bottom of the box because Athena did not want to see the destruction of humans. Therefore, even though people go through all the sufferings, they are able to keep hope in their heart and stay hopeful about their life and future.

We all have questions about the world around us. Here are some common questions and current answers.

Why is the sky blue?

“The blue color of the sky is due to Rayleigh scattering. As light moves through the atmosphere, most of the longer wavelengths pass straight through. Little of the red, orange and yellow light is affected by the air.

“However, much of the shorter wavelength light is absorbed by the gas molecules. The absorbed blue light is then radiated in different directions. It gets scattered all around the sky. Whichever direction you look, some of this scattered blue light reaches you. Since you see the blue light from everywhere overhead, the sky looks blue.”

Reference: sciencemadesimple.com/sky_blue.html

Why does the sun look bigger in the morning and in the evening?

“It is well known that when a light of any kind shines through a dense medium it appears larger, or rather gives a greater “glare,” at a given distance than when it is seen through a lighter medium. This is more remarkable when the medium holds aqueous particles or vapor in solution, as in a damp or foggy atmosphere. Anyone may be satisfied of this by standing within a few yards of an ordinary street lamp, and noticing the size of the flame; on going away to many times the distance, the light or “glare” upon the atmosphere will appear considerably larger.

“This phenomenon may be noticed, to a greater or less degree, at all times; but when the air is moist and vapory it is more intense. It is evident that at sunrise, and at sunset, the sun’s light must shine through a greater length of atmospheric air than at mid-day; besides which, the air near the earth is both more dense, and holds more watery particles in solution, than the higher strata through which the sun shines at noonday; and hence the light must be dilated or magnified, as well as modified in colour. …as the sun recedes from the meridian, over a plane surface, the light, as it strikes the atmosphere, must give a larger disc.”

Hint: Take a pen light and shine it on a table top. First hold it directly above the surface like the sun at noon day. See that the circle of the light beam is of a certain size. Now shine the light on the surface at an angle like when the sun goes down. Notice the size of the light on the table. Is it bigger? The table top is like the atmosphere above the earth. The light hits it at an angle and makes a larger image there. We see the object (the sun) even though it isn’t. (See a better explanation of this in the reference where they are allowed to show images.

How deep is the ocean?

It depends where you go swimming. Some joke, huh?

“The average depth of the oceans is about five times the average elevation of the land. In general, the continents stand about three miles above the ocean floor. According to the National Geographic Atlas, the deepest-known part of the ocean measures 10,924 meters (35,839 feet), in the Marianas Trench near Guam. If the world’s highest mountain, Mount Everest (29,141 feet), were to be placed into this trench, it would be covered by over 1.25 miles of water.”

Reference: edu/info/deepest-ocean.html

How was the moon formed?

“Two new studies bolster the popular theory that the moon formed from debris after a rogue planet smacked into Earth about 4.5 billion years ago. “

Hint: Read the reference carefully to see how scientist think on this subject. No scientific knowledge is needed to understand this article.

Reference: space.com/scienceastronomy/planetearth/moonwhack_main_000901.html

What is the Big Bang theory?

The theory is that the universe was formed or created in space time at a singularity of extreme density and energy. Dark energy detected at microwave frequencies is evidence of such a great release of energy. (The universe was formed everywhere at once from nothing according to a contact I had with those who know best.) The center of the universe does not exist and can not be determined. So they say. The theory may never be proved. Read the reference for a brief description.

Reference: liftoff.msfc.nasa.gov/academy/universe/b_bang.html

What is the highest mountain in our solar system?

“The highest mountain and volcano in the solar system is on the planet Mars. It is called Olympus Mons and is 16 miles (24 kilometers) high which makes it about three times higher than Mt. Everest. In addition to being very tall, it is also very wide (340 miles or 550 kilometers) and covers an area larger than the entire chain of Hawaiian islands. Olympus Mons is a very flat mountain which slopes by only 2 to 5 degrees. It is a shield volcano built up by eruptions of lava.”

Hint: Go to the reference to see a pic of this monster.

Where in the Caribbean can you find numerous different options for fishing, ranging from bone to fly, and even deep-sea fishing? The Bahamas offers all these different options and more, making it one of the premier holiday destinations for fishing enthusiasts. You’ll soon find that, when in the Bahamas fishing, the area is a Mecca for marine life. However, if you forget the modern boats and hi-tech rods you’ll soon find that a native form of catching your prey is not only the most rewarding, but also allows you to get back to nature and discover ancient skills that have been lost in the hubbub of modern life:

Remember the scene in the film, The Beach, when Richard arrives on a remote Thai beach and learns the art of spear fishing? Swap the Thai beach for the tropical waters of the Caribbean and you have your own natural paradise. However, unlike Leonardo Di Caprio’s character you won’t have to fashion your own spear out of bamboo, as the only weapon allowed in the Bahamas’ fishing version is the Hawaiian sling, designed to act in the same way as an underwater slingshot. While this sling technique isn’t as up to date as the sling gun – the more commonly used method for spear fishing – Bahamas’ officials have banned such methods to preserve the volume of fish currently living in the waters.

You need to be more than just a hunting aficionado in order to really excel in the Bahamas fishing for your prey. Some of the best spear fishermen are masters at free-diving, an extreme sport where competitors reach record depths and distances on a single breath. Taking a Hawaiian slingshot with you and attempting to catch prey while free diving really adds an element of thrill to the mix. However, if you haven’t practised free diving before then it’s probably not a good idea to do so with a slingshot in your hand. It is still easy to enjoy spear fishing while diving normally or even when snorkelling.

The time of the year can really make a difference to, not just the visibility of the water, but the prey that you are fishing. Bahamas’ tropical islands might be the perfect destination on a year round basis, but the months of May, June and July have the best visibility and the warmest waters. If it’s bonefish that you’re after then the cooler waters of November through to February are when wahoo and bonefish are abundant.

When in The Bahamas fishing with just a spear you’ll need to wear a specialist wetsuit. Some of these wetsuits come in two pieces and often include an optional hood and shorts. You’ll also need to wear fins, gloves and a mask. Many professional spear fishers use water belts to aid a faster descent, as well as wearing special fins which are slightly longer than your average scuba diving fins.

Of course, before you get good enough to start spear fishing professionally you’ll need to learn with an experienced guide. There are numerous companies in The Bahamas that can take you out, although you’ll be required to watch some vital safety information and undergo training before you try it for yourself!

One of the many challenges men have is to decide on what positions to use when getting booty. The biggest fears are that the woman will get bored with the “same old, same old” and as a result lose interest in sex. So the question becomes, what are the best sexual positions?

The best way to explain this is to talk about what NOT to do. With that in mind, I’ll now talk about the top five mistakes guys make when it comes to sexual positions, so that way you won’t continue making them.

Position Mistake 1: Imitating anything seen in a porn movie. This is probably the biggest reason that guys fail with sexual positions. Inexperienced guys think porn is a good model because they see studs banging beautiful broads, and… well, they just don’t know any better. The problem is that sexual positions in those sorts of movies are meant to display a good scene for viewers, not to maximize pleasure for the actors.

And in fact, one of the WORST positions for clitoral and vaginal stimulation is when the woman puts her ankles on your shoulders. With her pelvis bent back that far, she can feel pain in her cervix if you push in too far. Plus it’s a position that puts pressure. (If you ever have a chance to go behind the scenes and watch the making of an adult movie, you’ll see how quickly the mood gets killed when the actress keeps having to stop the scene to go to the bathroom!)

Position Mistake 2: Trying too hard to keep your weight off the woman, in any position. To a woman, sex is a way to get closer to her man. She loves it when he leans on the underside of her thighs. So here’s a tip for you to try… Next time you’re having sex with your woman (while you’re engaged in actual intercourse, that is), get more of your weight on her. You see, during sex, almost every woman enjoys feeling her man’s body pressed hard against her.

So how much weight should you put on her? Make it enough so that after you come, and the sexual frenzy dissipates, your woman will tell you that she feels like she’s being smooshed. Of course, do this within limits! If you’re on top off her grinding her pubic bone for too long, it can feel painful for her.

But the bottom line is that many, many women like to be pressured by at least some of the man’s weight. So save the gentlemanly sex for the royal family’s women!

Position Mistake 3: Letting the woman do all the work when she’s on top. For virtually every woman, sex is mostly a passive activity. So by being the motionless beta male, you destroy the whole purpose of sex for her, which is to open herself up to you penetrating into her body.

Position Mistake 4: Being a wimp. A lot of guys have read too many “Men are From Mars”-type books and think women like it if you ask permission for everything and let them take the lead. Be the alpha male instead and just “do it.” Flip her over, move her here and there. Be aggressive and even toss her about like a rag doll when you want to change positions, and… she’ll LOVE it! And don’t worry about it. If something is going on that the woman doesn’t like, she’ll let you know.

Position Mistake 5: Thinking the trickier positions are better. You don’t need to be upside down, hanging from a lamp, and doing something crazy. Just be normal. An old standby like the missionary (man on top, woman lying on her back) can be the best sexual position.

Tricky positions are just frustrating for everybody and often kill the mood because there’s too much “where should I put my arm?”… and not enough “let’s just have fun exploring.”

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful.
Death to Birth
By Grady Harp
THE GREATEST is a small film, quietly made in 28 days by first-time writer/director Shana Feste. The story/script is so unusual and touching that she was able to gather a rather extraordinary cast to bring this delicate story to life. It remains amazing to many of us that while the audiences flock to the gigantic CGI big noisy flicks, little jewels such as this film go completely unnoticed. The only hope is that enough people see this film now on DVD that that both the message of the movie and the quality of the acting and production gain the attention THE GREATEST so justly deserves.

Without introductory remarks the film opens with a brief prelude of the love between two (just graduated from high school) youngsters who after their first encounter with love pause on the drive home to attempt to make their feelings into words and BAM – a truck plunges into them and the boy Bennett (Aaron Johnson) is killed while the girl Rose (Carey Mulligan) is spared. The camera takes us rather abruptly to the graveside where the grieving parents Grace (Susan Sarandon) and Allen (Pierce Brosnan) and their young drug addicted son Ryan (Johnny Simmons) stare blankly into the hole that has been placed in the middle of their lives. None of the family copes with the death well: Grace can’t stop talking and crying about Bennett and searches for a way to find out how Bennett spent the last 17 minutes of his life (that time between the accident and his death) to the point of attending to the truck driver (Michael Shannon) in coma at the local hospital, awaiting his recovery to learn about those 17 minutes; Allen is unable to sleep and tries to cope with the tragedy by not allowing mention of it in his home; Ryan, now on frequent tests to see if he is drug free, attempts to relate to a group therapy session of kids whose siblings have died.

Into this dysfunctional crumbling decimated family comes Rose, three months later, pregnant with Bennett’s child, seeking refuge from a mother who is an addict. She is invited to move in, despite the fact that Grace loathes the idea and thinks Allen is merely trying to resolve the grief he has ever faced by attaching to Bennett’s only girlfriend. The remainder of the story reveals how each of these injured four characters gradually interact and by bearing their personal grief with their own life problems manage to find a place where they can recover together.

The acting is superb as one would expect from such a talented cast: Carey Mulligan again shows us that she is an important emerging actress; Susan Sarandon allows us to see and understand the degrees of near insanity that grief for loss of a child can distort a life; and Pierce Brosnan proves he is a first-rate actor, managing a difficult role with great sensitivity. The rest of the cast is also excellent in very minor roles – Jennifer Ehle as an ex-lover of Allen, Aaron Johnson and Johnny Simmons as the brothers, and Michael Shannon as the driver of the truck who gradually awakens form his come to make Grace face some truths. As for Shana Feste, she is a strong artist and we should be seeing more beautifully crafted stories from her. Grady Harp, June 10

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful.
A Pierce Brosnan We’ve Never Seen Before
By The Movie Man
“The Greatest” stars Pierce Brosnan and Susan Sarandon as Allen and Grace Brewer, a grief-stricken couple whose family has been pushed to the breaking point by the accidental death of their eldest son, Bennett. When a young woman, Rose (Carey Mulligan, “An Education”), shows up a few months later announcing that she’s pregnant with Bennett’s child, the Brewers are forced to explore the depths of their empathy. Both Brosnan and Sarandon turn in believable performances. Brosnan in particular is really strong here. I’ve never seen him so open and so emotional before.

The problem is the portrayal of Bennett, whom we see only briefly before the accident that takes his life. More a metaphor for all that is good with untapped, unlimited potential, he never comes off as an actual flesh-and-blood individual. Since the accident is largely his responsibility, it’s tough to get on board with his parents’ grief. There are also some jarring moments when dialogue or actions seem really off and undermine the tone of the movie.

Movies about grieving are tough sells. On the surface, they are depressing and put off many people. It’s the handling of the theme that determines whether audiences will embrace such a movie. Think “Ordinary People:” solid script, superb direction, first-rate performances. “The Greatest” falls far short of that high standard. Bonus extras include interviews with the director, Pierce Brosnan and Carey Mulligan, and deleted scenes.

The leads in the form of Pierce Brosnan, Susan Sarandon, and the divine Carey Mulligan deliver credible and compelling performances that made this an engaging human drama. The prevalent theme in this movie is grief and coming to terms with loss – Bennett Brewer (Aaron Johnson) is a popular student at his high school but deep down he is shy around girls and waits till the last day of school to ask Rose (Carey Mulligan) out. The two hit it off and fall head over heels in love. Bennett chooses an inopportune moment to declare his love to Rose, and tragedy strikes, killing Bennett.

Three months later, Rose arrives at Bennett’s house and is greeted by his father, Allen (Pierce Brosnan). The Bennett’s epitomize a family torn apart by grief – mom Grace (Susan Sarandon) appears totally overwhelmed by grief to the point that she acts irrationally; Allen puts on a calm appearance although deep inside, he struggles to come to terms with his son’s death and the strain it places on his marriage and his younger son; younger son Ryan (Johnny Simmons) is a druggie who attends support meetings but detached, feeling a sense of resentment towards his dead brother who was the favored child and who even in death seems to hog all the attention. Rose finds herself in a conundrum – she is pregnant with Bennett’s child and has nowhere to go. Allen warms to her immediately and takes her in, but Grace is mistrusting and unwilling to welcome the young woman.

The story flows well and the various characters credibly portray their grief and the process of healing, even though in the case of Grace it takes a long time for her to accept that her favorite son is dead. The sub-plots do not get any real development – Jennifer Ehle plays Allen’s colleague at school (he is a college instructor) who still harbors feelings for him (the pair were apparently involved in an intimate relationship some time ago), and Ryan falls for a girl in his support group.

Carey Mulligan of An Education delivers a finely nuanced performance as the young mother-to-be. This is a young actress who is showing the potential to be a great character actress and her role as Rose struck a chord in me. Pierce Brosnan is compelling in the role of the stressed out college instructor who can’t seem to ‘reach’ his wife in her grief. Sarandon delivers a good performance as well though there are parts in the movie where her grief seems to be displayed with over-the-top histrionics without striking a note of credibility or emotionally connecting with this viewer.

On the whole, my husband and I both liked “The Greatest” – thanks to the compelling acting by the leads, the movie rises above being a common tearjerker/ melodrama.
