It is said that breaking up is permenant while taking a break means just that: taking a break and then returning to the reletionship.

Personally I view "taking a break" as unclear and an easier way of letting someone down then saying were over. Taking a break is negative in that it often means that the two people go out and try to find someone else to be with. If they dont find anyone better they go back with who they were with and are no longer 'on a break.'
References :
Taking a break means, "I'm not sure what I want right now, just give me some space for a while." It may or may not be permanent. Breaking up means that you definitely don't want to be together anymore. Lots of times, taking a break can lead to a breakup.
References :
It is a way to keep a leash on someone in case you might not find anyone else better out there. When a guy said that to me I said, we are either breaking up or staying together, one or the other, anything in the middle is just setting yourself up for hurt feelings and misunderstandings. Better to just break up and then if the two people want to get back together later they can. Clean and simple.
References :
breaking up is separating entirely.. taking a break is splitting up but agreeing to get back with eachother if no one more interesting comes along. so if youre taking a break it means yeah i sorta like you but i want someone else and if i cant get them then il go back to you.
References :
Breaking up means you end the relationship with no hesitation. Taking a break means you hesitate about becoming more committed or breaking up completly. I think taking a break is just a misguided way of not facing your own relationship and its problems. Therefore, end it and permanently.
