Whats the difference between taking a break and breaking up?

By | December 23, 2009

I’m just curious, cause some friends are breaking up and some are taking a break, whats the difference, if there even is one?

well, when u take breaks its because you want to think it over about your relationship if you to continue with it or something. Either you could take a decision of fixing the problem or break up. Breaking up just doesn’t have an option. You break up, you forget about everything. A break up doesn’t let u undo things, so u cant regret it. However, taking a break gives u the time to think what u really want.Other people use the "taking a break" as an excuse to get away from their partner. They shouldn’t do that. It causes serious emotional damage to the other person because they think that taking a break is to break up. The only similarity between this 2 theme is that you’re not with you’re bf/gf. I hope i helped. =)

Breaking up is "permanent" – you don’t intend to get back together.

Taking a break is temporary – both people need to take some time to think things through so they can get back together.

They are both pretty much the same but "taking a break" is a way of leaving over a period of time, rather than straight away, its ike breaking up and then drifting apart.

i seriously think those two things r stupid…..becuz if ur taking a break den u can c others, its da same as breaking up…..takin a break means basically they can get back together any time but breakin up means they are done for sure.

    Breaking up is honest.

Taking a break is passive aggressive.

End result is exactly the same.

Its just a small space into break-up land.

I would never allow a guy to "take a break" with me. If he wants to take a break, I would simply break it off.

Honestly, it’s pretty much the same thing…i think taking a break is useless – either you’re with the person or you’re not PERIOD. But in high school terms, "taking a break" means you’re still with the guy but you pretty much give each other "space" – don’t talk to him or interact with him until the "break" is over…"breaking up" is when you’re just done with the relationship.

Taking a break does not involve dating other people. It means spending time apart to see if you miss each ohter and want to work things out.

Breaking up means to completely stop dating one person and being free to date whomever you want.

I think taking a break is thought of as not as serious, but it really is. Breaking up means no more intimate affiliation with that person. Taking a break means more or less having the "right" to meet or fool around with other people, but are guaranteed to be back with that person. I think of it as no less than cheating.
Breaking up is a better option in my opinion. If someone is serious enough about taking a break, the relationship is not meant to stay together.

My opinion is "taking a break", is a polite way of saying…. "I am not sure I am happy with this relationship….I am not sure if I want to break up, but want to explore my feelings." That way, they still have the other one hanging onto hope, and will still be there when (and if), they resume the relationsip.

with breaking up, there is little or no chance of getting back together. people taking a break are just seeing other people for a while just to make sure they’re doing the right thing.

Breaking up means that the relationship is ending and the two are free to pursue other people.

Taking a break means that the couple needs some time apart to sort things out for themselves and are not going to date or pursue other people.

taking a break is pretty much being apart, but still having those strings attached. while on the other hand, breaking up means it is over. be careful, it could be one of those nasty break-ups.

Breaking up means you end the relationship with no hesitation. Taking a break means you hesitate about becoming more committed or breaking up completly. I think taking a break is just a misguided way of not facing your own relationship and its problems. Therefore, end it and permanently.

breaking up is separating entirely.. taking a break is splitting up but agreeing to get back with eachother if no one more interesting comes along. so if youre taking a break it means yeah i sorta like you but i want someone else and if i cant get them then il go back to you.

It is a way to keep a leash on someone in case you might not find anyone else better out there. When a guy said that to me I said, we are either breaking up or staying together, one or the other, anything in the middle is just setting yourself up for hurt feelings and misunderstandings. Better to just break up and then if the two people want to get back together later they can. Clean and simple.

Taking a break means, "I’m not sure what I want right now, just give me some space for a while." It may or may not be permanent. Breaking up means that you definitely don’t want to be together anymore. Lots of times, taking a break can lead to a breakup.

It is said that breaking up is permenant while taking a break means just that: taking a break and then returning to the reletionship.

Personally I view "taking a break" as unclear and an easier way of letting someone down then saying were over. Taking a break is negative in that it often means that the two people go out and try to find someone else to be with. If they dont find anyone better they go back with who they were with and are no longer ‘on a break.’
